Pyli is a picturesque town located about 18 km west of the city of Trikala. Built between the majestic Koziakas and Itamos mountains, it forms a natural “gateway” to the mountainous region of Pindos, traversed by the Portaikos River. Its location makes it an ideal starting point for exploring natural landscapes, history, and local flavors.
HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL MONUMENTS
1. The Stone Arch Bridge of Portaikos
Built around 1514 by Saint Vissarion, the bridge stands over the Portaikos River, approximately 1.5 km outside of Pyli. It spans about 67 meters in length with an arch height of nearly 30 meters — a stone marvel nestled in a wild natural setting. Today, it’s a popular spot for photography, relaxing at the nearby café, or taking a stroll along the river toward the Byzantine church of Porta Panagia.
2. Church of Porta Panagia
Located a short walk along the riverbank, this church dates back to 1283 and is of particular interest due to its unusual mosaic layout: Christ is placed on the left and the Virgin Mary on the right — contrary to traditional Christian iconography. The church also preserves its original era’s floor and features 18th-century painted frescoes.
3. Ancient Acropolis and Fortifications
Remnants of the ancient fortified site “Athenaion” can still be seen in the area, with carved stone blocks highlighting the strategic importance of this passage to the Pindos mountain range.
5. Museum of Water Power (Bligori Mill)
A functioning 17th-century watermill (circa 1665), now transformed into a museum that showcases traditional hydropower, technological processes of the time, and the local products once produced there.

The climbing field of Pyli features over 5 active sectors with nearly 350 routes — ranging from easy to very difficult (7b/7c and above). Popular routes include Unforgiven (7c), Black Velvet (7b+), Imperator (7b+/c), and Sex Drive (8a) — ideal for experienced climbers, but also accessible to beginners under guidance.
Hiking & Valley Walks
Follow trails along the Portaikos River, through gorges and fir forests, with paths leading to wild landscapes such as Kamiaitis and Kakorema. In spring and summer, the routes bloom with wildflowers and crystal-clear streams, while in autumn they enchant with golden-red foliage.

Plastiras Lake – The “Thessalian Jewel” just 40–45 km from Pyli, Trikala
Situated at an altitude of approximately 750 m, Plastiras Lake is an artificial lake created in 1959 by damming the Tavropos (Megdovas) River, flooding the Nevropoli plateau. It spans 24 sq. km and reaches a depth of up to 60 meters. The project was initiated by Nikolaos Plastiras and still serves today for water supply, irrigation, and electricity production.
